Chapter 9. Major Formatting Guidelines
The ESP Review of this Society basically follows the APA Style adopted by many journals in applied linguistics, including TESOL Quarterly. The following are examples of key points. For further details, refer to:
American Psychological Association. (2019). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.). Washington, DC: Author.
1. In-text Citations and Parenthetical References (Applies also to Korean manuscripts)
1) Quotation marks and source citation:
He stated, “The ‘placebo effect’ disappeared...when behaviors were studied in this manner” (Smith, 1982, p. 276).
Quotations are enclosed in double quotation marks (“ ”). Within a quotation, use single quotation marks (‘ ’) for another quotation or emphasis. Even if the sentence ends with the quotation, the period is placed after the closing parenthesis containing the reference information. Within the parentheses, separate the author, year, and page number(s) with commas, leaving one space after p. or pp. (for multiple pages) before the page number.
2) Page number only after quotation:
Smith (1982) found that “the ‘placebo effect’ disappeared when [his own and other’s] behaviors were studied in this manner” (p. 276).
3) Two authors:
In English text, connect with “and”; in Korean, connect with “과/와.” In parentheses, use “&.”
Example: Gardner and Lambert (1976) found that their previous study (Gardner & Lambert, 1972) could not…
In Korean: Gardner와 Lambert(1976)의 연구는 과거의 연구(Lambert & Gardner, 1972)보다…
4) Three to five authors:
At first mention, list all author names; thereafter, in English manuscripts, use “et al.”; in Korean manuscripts, use “등” or “외 4인.”
First mention: William, Jones, Smith, Bradner, and Torrington (1983) found that…
Second mention: William et al. (1983) studied the effect of…
5) Six or more authors:
From the first mention, in English manuscripts use “et al.”; in Korean manuscripts use “등” or “외 5인.” In the References list, write all names in full. (et al. is the abbreviation of the Latin et alii meaning “and others”; place a period after al. only, and do not italicize.)
6) Multiple works within parentheses:
List in alphabetical order, separated by semicolons. For works by the same author, arrange chronologically and separate years with commas.
Example: Oxford (1986, 1989, 1994) reported that many studies (Gosden, 1992; Hanania & Akhtar, 1985; Hopkins, 1987, 1988a, 1989; Tarone et al., 1981) used strategy training…
7) Authors with the same surname but different given names:
Use initials to avoid confusion, even if publication years differ. For Korean names, write the full name. Depending on the author’s preferred romanization, you may write initials before the surname (e.g., K. Kim for Kildong Kim, K.-D. Kim for Kil-Dong Kim).
Example: H. D. Brown (1993) and J. D. Brown (1994) agreed that…
2. References List Formatting (Applies also to Korean manuscripts)
The References list shall include all and only the works cited in the paper, arranged alphabetically by author’s surname. For Korean manuscripts including both Korean and English references, list Korean works first in Korean alphabetical order, followed by English works in alphabetical order. Format Korean references in accordance with English APA style.
If the manuscript is in English, romanize Korean author names and titles according to the Yale Romanization system, and provide an English translation in square brackets. (If an English title is already provided in the abstract of a previously published paper in the Society’s journal, that title may be used.)

3. Table and Figure Format and Title Placement
The number and title of a table or figure shall be placed at the center above it. Only the table/figure number shall be in bold. In English, “TABLE 3,” “FIGURE 5,” etc. shall be written entirely in uppercase, with the remainder of the title placed below the table/figure, capitalizing the first letter of each major word. In Korean, use forms such as “표 3” and “그림 5.” All numbers shall be written in Arabic numerals. In the text, refer to them as “as shown in Table/Figure 3” or “표/그림 5에서 보듯이.”
